background:
Representing about 2% of human DNA, chromosome 20 consists of approximately 63 million bases and 600 genes. Chromosome 20 contains a region with numerous genes expressed in the epididymis, which are thought important for seminal production, and some viewed as potential targets for male contraception. The PRNP gene encoding the prion protein associated with spongiform encephalopathies, like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, is found on chromosome 20. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, ring chromosome 20 epilepsy syndrome and Alagille syndrome are also associated with chromosome 20. The C20orf19 gene product has been provisionally designated C20orf19 pending further characterization.

Function:
Centrosomal protein required for establishing a robustmitotic centrosome architecture that can endure the forces thatconverge on the centrosomes during spindle formation. Required forstabilizing the expanded pericentriolar material around thecentriole.

Subunit:
Interacts with AKAP9, CEP72, ODF2, PCNT and TUBGCP2.

Subcellular Location:
Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, centrosome.Note=Localizes to centrosomes throughout the cell cycle. Aftercentrosome duplication, it usually remains associated only with themother centrosome, containing the older mature centriole andparticles surrounding it. During prophase, additional particlesaccumulate around both separating centrosomes. Does not accumulateat the microtubule minus ends, but instead localizes to thecentrosomes and centrosome-surrounding area in amicrotubule-independent and dependent manner, respectively.

Post-translational modifications:
Phosphorylation at Thr-379 by PLK1 is not needed forcentrosomal localization or pericentriolar material expansion butis indispensable for spindle-pole stabilization.

Similarity:
Belongs to the kizuna family.
