C3orf39, also known as AGO61, is a 580 amino acid secreted protein belonging to the glycosyltransferase 61 family. C3orf39 is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 3p25.1. Chromosome 3 is made up of approximately 214 million bases encoding over 1,100 genes. Notably, there is a chemokine receptor gene cluster and a variety of human cancer related loci on chromosome 3. Particular regions of the chromosome 3 short arm are deleted in many types of cancer cells. Key tumor suppressing genes on chromosome 3 encode apoptosis mediator RASSF1, cell migration regulator HYAL1 and angiogenesis suppressor SEMA3B. Marfan Syndrome, porphyria, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease are a few of the numerous genetic diseases associated with chromosome 3.

Tissue Specificity:
Highly expressed in the brain, muscle, heart, and kidney in both fetus and adult. In the brain, highest expression in the cortex and cerebellum. Highly expressed in the pancreas.

DISEASE:
Defects in GTDC2 are the cause of muscular dystrophy-dystroglycanopathy congenital with brain and eye anomalies A8 (MDDGA8) [MIM:614830]. An autosomal recessive disorder characterized by congenital muscular dystrophy associated with cobblestone lissencephaly and other brain anomalies, eye malformations, profound mental retardation, and death usually in the first years of life. Included diseases are the more severe Walker-Warburg syndrome and the slightly less severe muscle-eye-brain disease.
