background:
SLC25A6 (solute carrier family 25, member A6) participates in the exchange of ADP and ATP across the mitochondrial inner membrane. It may be involved in the formation of the permeability transition pore complex (PTPC), a multiprotein complex built up at the contact site between the inner and the outer mitochondrial membranes. Opening of the PTPC causes massive swelling of mitochondria, rupture of the outer membrane and release of intermembrane components that induce apoptosis.
Function:
Catalyzes the exchange of cytoplasmic ADP with mitochondrial ATP across the mitochondrial inner membrane. May participate in the formation of the permeability transition pore complex (PTPC) responsible for the release of mitochondrial products that triggers apoptosis.
Subunit:
Found in a complex with ARL2, ARL2BP and SLC25A6. Homodimer. Interacts with influenza A virus PB1-F2 protein and HISLV1 Vpr.
Subcellular Location:
Mitochondrion inner membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Similarity:
Belongs to the mitochondrial carrier family.
Contains 3 Solcar repeats.
