background:
Interleukin 11 is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by mesenchymal-derived adherent cells. IL11 shares many functions of IL6 and LIF, including potentiation of megakaryocyte activity, enhancement of human myeloma cell proliferation, and enhancement of hepatic acute phase protein production.
Interleukin 11 directly stimulates the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and megakaryocyte progenitor cells, and induces megakaryocyte maturation resulting in increased platelet production. Clinically it is used to prevent severe thrombocytopenia and the reduction of the need for platelet transfusion following myelosuppressive chemotherapy.

白介素11，是一种多向性细胞因子。很多细胞都能合成IL11，如：内皮细胞、纤维母细胞、软骨细胞、滑膜细胞、成骨细胞、上皮细胞、神经元、胸腺等。正常的血清中，IL11表达很少或处在检测水平之下。对造血系统的功能包括：干细胞、巨核细胞、骨髓细胞、红细胞和B淋巴细胞的增生和发育。对造血系统之外也具有多相性的作用，有些是刺激和促进增生，有些是抑制作用。人、大鼠、小鼠的IL-11的前体有199个氨基酸。成熟形态为178个氨基酸。
