Alginic acid sodium is a gelling and nontoxic anionic polysaccharide. Alginic acid contains a carboxylic acid group on each repeat unit along the chain. When these groups are in the acid form, they interact with each other strongly through hydrogen bonding rendering the polymer insoluble in water. Converting them to the sodium salt however reduces the interactions between the polymer chains and the ionized polymer dissolves in water.
