    天蚕素(cecropins)是第一个被发现的动物抗菌肽,396年,由Boman等从天蚕蛹中分离得到。该类多肽抗生素一般含有37~39个氨基酸残基,不含半胱氨酸,其N端区域具有强碱性,可形成近乎完美的双亲螺旋结构,而在C端区域可形成疏水螺旋,两者之间有甘氨酸和脯氨酸形成的铰链区,多数多肽的C端被酰胺化,酰胺化对其抗菌活性具有重要作用。天蚕素(cecropins)对革兰氏阳性菌、部分革兰氏阴性菌具有很强的杀伤力,而对真菌和真核细胞没有毒性。目前研究认为,抗菌肽是最具潜力的抗生素替代品之一。而天蚕素又是目前研究比较清楚的抗菌肽。
天蚕素抗菌肽利用N端所带的正电荷与原核细胞的细胞膜磷脂双分子层密集的负电荷静电相吸,C端柔性的插入疏水区,在两亲性α-螺旋作用下,在原核细胞膜上形成4nm的离子通道,离子通道的形成改变了细胞膜内外的渗透压,细胞膜内物质大量外渗,致细菌细胞死亡,起到杀菌作用。天蚕素抗菌肽对细菌、病毒、念珠菌、原虫、癌细胞具有广谱的活性,能抑制革兰氏阳性和阴性球菌和杆菌,如绿脓杆菌、大肠杆菌、伤寒杆菌、痢疾杆菌、布氏杆菌、金黄色葡萄球菌、溶血性链球菌等等,并对感染植物的多种病原菌也有明显的杀菌作用。另外,天蚕素抗菌肽对高度耐药的伤寒杆菌、耐药性金葡菌同样敏感,对感冒、疤疹病毒能抑制其繁殖,对疟原虫、痢疾阿米巴均有效
